Top Tips
Tips for kitchens
1. The key to any lighting scheme is the design. When it comes to positioning your lights (down-lights in particular), forget about grids and symmetry and think about the key areas where light is really needed.
2. Use LED lights in conjunction with other light sources. The potential for saving energy is huge. If you think about lighting a room, using LED with other lighting can reduce energy consumption by about 25 per cent. It’s worth investing in quality LED fittings (e.g. the Zenigata LED from Sharp).
3. Consider the beam angle. The narrower the angle (less than 45 degrees say) the more focused and spot-like the light will appear, whereas 120 degrees for example will give an evenly spread distribution of light without “hot-spots” or glare.
4.Opt for recessed or semi-recessed fittings that won't collect grease.
5. Choose between highlighting a high ceiling or kitchen units. Swan neck display lights subtly highlight the glass cabinets and row of tall units while also create an interesting decorative feature
(see images attached).
6. If you wish to highlight the ceiling, run LED strips along the tops of cabinets to cast a glow towards the ceiling for more ambient light.
7. The island is usually the central feature in the kitchen and so effective, attractive lighting is key. You can light with recessed down-lights, or decorative pendants. Hang pendant lights fairly low over tables and kitchen islands to focus the light pool. A stunning feature light such as The Elica star fitting which we used in this kitchen will add that wow factor to the kitchen. It also doubles as an extractor fan!
8. Kitchens are home to sharp knives and food so bright, focused task lighting that doesn't create shadows is important. LED under cabinet lighting is ideal as this runs cool and costs very little.
9.To create an intimate and more atmospheric light for evening meals, it is essential that you can control the mood with dimmers. Also putting task and ambient lights on separate circuits will give you more control over the level of lighting.
10. For mood lighting consider setting lights into the plinth of the island or row of units to light the floor. They will bathe the floor with light, enhance the impression of space and make the units appear to float. There are coloured LED lights also available such as the blue version used here which add some interest and a touch of subtle colour.
11. Finally, remember that the best time to consider your new lighting scheme, is before you start to build or redecorate and don’t be afraid to get a lighting or interior designer to help, it’s worth it as good lighting makes a world of difference!
