Whether you have the space for a stand-alone Island or maybe just a peninsula with a small worktop overhang, including a breakfast bar can change the character of your new kitchen. This area, all too often, becomes the social hub of your home when family and friends come to yours for dinner. (more…)

Clever storage ideas are a vital part of any successful kitchen design. When designing your kitchen, especially when you are limited with space, maximise your storage with some clever storage solutions. Your completed kitchen will be a much more functional and therefore more enjoyable space in which to work.

Top Tip for April from Interior Designer Mary Taylor

“Spring time clearout” – I am often asked for suggestions about options for increasing the amount of storage in a house, whether it is for a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or living space. It is however a delight to find that after an extensive spring clean out, extra space can be found and as well as a sense of calm and order. Before considering extra storage, my tip would be to give yourself a couple of days to declutter and move on those items that you no longer need. Be bold and brave in your choices, the chances are you won’t miss them or even remember them.

Tips for Kitchens

1. The key to any lighting scheme is the design. When it comes to positioning your lights (down-lights in particular), forget about grids and symmetry and think about the key areas where light is really needed.
2. Use LED lights in conjunction with other light sources. The potential for saving energy is huge. If you think about lighting a room, using LED with other lighting can reduce energy consumption by about 25 per cent. It’s worth investing in quality LED fittings (e.g. the Zenigata LED from Sharp).

Lighting should be a key consideration in every room, in particular the kitchen.
Of all the rooms in the house, the kitchen has the widest range of functions and needs the most versatile lighting scheme. Good lighting is about creating layers and it’s important you think about how a space is used. The key is variety and to consider each of the individual areas in a room so the lighting creates invisible walls. For example, open-plan living-eating- cooking spaces need lighting as if they were three different rooms.

Tips for Extraction When Designing a Hob in a Kitchen Island
Monday, July 18th, 2011
A frequently sought after function in newly designed Kube kitchens today are cook zones in an Island. Not every home can take an island with counter space allocated to a 6 ring hob, but if you are blessed with the space, this layout is very effective. Consider an Island that faces out onto your open plan dining and living space. You, as an enthusiastic cook or professional chef, can face your family or guests while preparing a meal.
